"Under civil forfeiture, Americans who haven’t been charged with
wrongdoing can be stripped of their cash, cars, and even homes. Is that
all we’re losing?"

I have long held the view that enabling police and other officials to
directly and personally profit from seized assets is effectively
outright encouragement of corruption.  In this and other ways the US has
increasingly permitted their law enforcement to bring themselves into
disrepute to the detriment of civil society as a whole.
