The midwife who saved intersex babies

"Five years ago a midwife in Kenya delivered a child with male and female
sexual organs. The father told her to kill it, but instead she hid it and
raised it as her own. Two years later, the same thing happened again - and
before long she was forced to flee to save the children's lives."

When newborn infants are routinely murdered at birth for being intersex, then
it's time to educate people.

We can scoff and say those people are superstitious tribal poor Africans, on
the other side of the world. It doesn't affect us.

But it does.

1.7% of people are born intersex - with both female and male sex
characteristics. And that's true in your country too - but it turns out we're
just as "backward" and ignorant as people in remote parts of Africa. We don't
talk about it. We hide the truth. We have our babies surgically altered,
usually without waiting for them to be old enough to make informed choices
and often keeping it a secret from the child even when they're grown.

And when our children grow up and express that they feel identified with a
different gender than we've assigned them, we repress them, ostracize them,
tell them they're crazy or damaged.

It's time to take on the wisdom of one Kenyan midwife and accept people as
they are. In need of love and respect. Accepted as they are.
