"They tried to erase Harriet Tubman. Think about that. In the year 2025, on a
federal website about the Underground Railroad, her face disappeared. Her words
— stripped out. Her story — shrunk down and smoothed over into a Hallmark-card
fantasy about “American ideals of liberty and freedom.” Harriet Tubman — the
woman who led enslaved people through darkness toward freedom — reduced to an
inconvenient footnote.
This wasn’t a glitch. It wasn’t sloppy editing. It was the deliberate sanding
down of truth until it no longer cut. And the fact that it even happened — that
someone felt entitled to reach into history and carve Tubman out — should take
your breath away. It should stop you in your tracks, a jolt of shock that
refuses to fade.
Because it was never just about a single webpage. It was a test case. A proof
of concept for something bigger: who holds the pen on our memory, who decides
what is worthy of being remembered and what is condemned to silence. It is
about history itself being bent until it no longer resembles truth, but
propaganda — a weapon in the hands of power. Orwell saw it coming and carved
the warning into stone: “
Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every
book rewritten, every picture repainted… History has stopped. Nothing exists
except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” Those words
were supposed to be a nightmare we read about in fiction. Now they read like a
press release. What Orwell imagined as dystopia is being rolled out as policy,
line by line, edit by edit, erasure by erasure."
