'Melbourne's best tram drivers are revving their engines as they prepare to
represent Australia in the World Tramdriver Championship in Vienna.

Drivers Sally Burgess and Craig Maher will test their skills against the
world's best as they compete amongst 27 teams at the inaugural event next week.

Mr Maher said that to be chosen from "a network of the size of Yarra Trams,
with 1,400 drivers" was especially satisfying.

"To be selected was a huge honour, but more of a surprise," he told ABC Radio
Melbourne
's Raf Epstein.

The selection process was based on safety and performance criteria, which the
drivers had to tick off.

"They picked us based off of our safety records and our performance for the
year and how we get on with passengers," Ms Burgess said.

The duo has been training with coach Sharon Marshall to ensure they're equipped
with the right skills ahead of the games.

"I think they're doing a great job with all the skills that they have," Ms
Marshall said.'
