"There is power in a garden. There is power in the land.

And across the world, from Ukraine to Zambia to south London, gardens are
springing up and blossoming in some of the most unlikely places. They’re doing
so thanks to a rising wave of land defenders: people reclaiming the right to
grow healthy food for themselves and their communities, in a world that is
increasingly squeezing that into the margins.

People like Anastasiya Volkova, from Kharkiv on Ukraine’s frontline, who is
leading hundreds of local people in creating and sustaining permaculture
gardens, sometimes literally under fire.

People like Mugove Walter Niyaka. His Ubuntu Learning Trust is drawing on
ancient African traditions of co-operation to help Zambians left marooned by
the pressures of modern life rediscover the joy of growing food, while
simultaneously rehabilitating degraded farmland.

And people like Josina Calliste, a founder of London’s LION – Land In Our Names
– which is making green waves among the city’s BPOC (black people and people of
colour) community.

What they have in common is that, along with 16 other groups, they are
recipients of the 2025 Lush Spring Prize. Backed by the natural cosmetics
company of the same name, this has awarded £250,000 to pioneers in regenerative
living."
