"Fuel for nothing and your energy bills for free: that is the promise of
vehicle-to-grid technology, according to Amber co-chief executive Dan Adams,
who has been chasing its potential for a long time.
“I’ve been working in this area for 18 years and vehicle-to-grid technology has
always been this mythical thing on the horizon,” he says.
“It’s exciting to now be at a moment that it is here and it’s going to be
widely available soon.”
Vehicle-to-grid technology will connect electric cars to the electricity grid,
allowing them to be used as powerful batteries in addition to getting drivers
from A to B.
Two major energy retailers have announced trials of vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
technology in recent weeks, in addition to Amber’s pilot program that will soon
extend into another 50 homes.
Some barriers to the technology remain but energy and automotive experts say
2026 could be the year it enters many households, cutting electricity bills and
even turning into a side hustle for those willing to follow the market.
Vehicle-to-grid technology works using a bi-directional charger that connects
cars to the electricity grid to fuel them but can also feed energy from their
battery into the grid or into a home to keep the lights on.
Origin Energy recently announced a V2G trial involving BYD Atto 3 SUVs and
StarCharge equipment sold in a subscription bundle.
Fifty customers will be selected to participate in the technology test, due to
begin in 2026.
Within days, AGL announced a competing V2G trial that will also start in 2026,
although it will be structured differently.
The energy retailer will offer discounted bi-directional chargers to 50
customers for testing purposes and will recruit an additional 50 participants
to use their own equipment.
Importantly, AGL has partnered with four electric vehicle brands – Kia,
Hyundai, Zeekr and BYD – which agreed to extend their battery warranties to
support the trial."
