"The Victorian Liberals will scrap Australia's first formal Treaty agreement
with First Peoples if elected.
The
ABC understands the decision was made at a recent shadow cabinet meeting,
with the Opposition on Tuesday committing to introduce legislation repealing
Treaty in the first 100 days of a state Liberal government.
While the Opposition had already withdrawn its support for the Treaty process
and said it would not support the proposed bill, it had not announced a plan to
unwind Treaty if elected until today.
The proposed legislation that underpins the Treaty agreement is set to be
debated in Parliament today.
The agreement between the government and First Peoples — which will still
proceed with the support of Greens and Labor — is expected to be signed before
the end of the year."
